Jason R. Fruitstay-at-home father and computer programmer |

I am a stay-at-home father and computer programmer with a background in music. I've also done things like raising chickens and keeping rats as pets, and I'm an aficionado of aviation, medieval thought, and the age of steam.
Though this is my main occupation, and one that I love, it doesn't produce much of the content of this website. That is probably partly because I don't love to expose information about my daughters on the Internet. Admittedly, there's not much to worry about, but I'm a father, and protective. That hasn't stopped me from writing about several children's books, however.
Though I strongly prefer to use and develop desktop applications over web-based ones, I do both desktop and web programming, and find myself doing more and more of the latter. I try to use open-source languages and development tools, and have been pretty successful at moving away from the Microsoft stack with which I began.
I'm a language gourmand. I'm proficient enough in the following languages to have written a useful application in each:
My strongest languages now are, in order:
I was trained as a classical violist, and performed freelance for several years before I decided that paying the rent would be nice. Now, while I continue to play the viola, I find myself doing an increasing amount of early and folk music, and I play the recorders and lute in a local ensemble, the Rosewood Consort. When I do play modern strings, the violin gets more attention, because it has a wider expressive range and is more fit to be played alone (he admits sadly).
I combine my musical background with programming to do music typesetting in Lilypond, a Scheme-based musical notation language that produces remarkable results.
I have composed in the past, and I may yet. Be forewarned. Rehabilitation is a myth.
If you want to talk with me, or discuss what I do, or pay me to do what I do, the best approach is e-mail. My e-mail address is:
